Art faceoff:

Il est de notre devoir de comprendre
l’histoire de toutes les cultures
vivantes connues, même petites,
comme un tout...
(Arnold J. Toynbee)
Arnold Toynbee’s remark has taken on its full meaning in our era of change, and no
doubt even moreso in the fields of art and culture.
Slobodan Maldini expresses this conception of past and present civilisations forming a
„whole“: he goes to them for inspiration, for the meaning and purpose of his architecture,
and his faith in it. Without it being a question of a limiting or nostalgic reminiscence
of the past, his pursuit of „wholeness“ involves a long patient study: it is the result of
constantly penetrating the deep layers of the past, undertaken with the aim of discovering
a spirit and a language which, no matter how old and spent it may seem, carries in it
the seed of something new, the challenge of a beginning.
Biljana Tomić, 1985
